So by now you know there are a few parts to getting your class 4. First there is a written knowledge test. Read up on that here
and
which I just talked about and then there will be a road test which also includes the pre-trip inspection and then a medical test on your own time if you pass the road test and pre-inspection test.
Hopefully since you already have your full driver’s license and several years of driving experience, the road test isn’t going to be much of a challenge for you. You know how to drive, you know the importance of shoulder checks – don’t forget right shoulder checks!! -- and driving the speed limit. You know how to make a left hand turn and how to use your mirrors. You should be practicing with a vehicle approved for the road test, so get comfortable. Know how to park, know what is required for backing up because the class 4 has additional rules for backing up.
Since you have been driving for a while, you have probably picked up a few bad habits or maybe you have forgotten some of the rules of driving – so pick up a manual or go online and refresh your memory about the rules of the road.
In my experience the road test was not a lengthy part of getting my class 4. It was about a 20 minute drive where we drove through normal city traffic. The examiner was looking for smooth stops at a light – this makes sense right? You want to drive in a way that doesn’t throw your passengers around and make them uncomfortable.
The examiner wanted to see that I was shoulder checking and that I was driving within the speed limit but also confidently. If you are driving under the speed limit, that just looks like you are nervous and that isn’t helpful either.
They wanted to see that I could park the vehicle and that I would turn my tires away from or towards the curb depending on if I was on a flat road, downhill or uphill. They wanted to see how I would handle stopping, and then backing up. That’s a really important one. Read the manual on the proper procedures for backing up – what do you do when you have a “co-pilot” in the vehicle or when you are by yourself. Read up on the proper way to do this so you can demonstrate it.
It is a serious thing to have and use a class 4 license because other people will be depending on you to follow the rules and be someone who will drive safely. So don’t just practice up so you can pass, practice up so you can be an excellent driver.
Make sure you watch Video 3 on the home page where I go through the details of my Road Test Day.
All the best!
